10 Tips from BBA Students on How to Succeed in a Top-Tier BBA Program

Students who have enrolled for BBA courses for the current academic year may be wondering as what all to do during their 3-year program in order to have a successful career. Well said and done, there is no specific formula for the same but some of the tips that may be provided by the senior students, or the ones who have already gone through the entire length of course would certainly go a long way to help a new student to start shaping his career right from his BBA orientation days.

1. Establish a Long-term Career Goal
By taking the time to identify your long-term aspirations, you start by focusing on short-term opportunities that do matter, and hence improve your probability of success in due course of time. If you have a particular long term career goal, you may start focusing on a specific stream of specialization in case you want to pursue Post Graduation in Management before launching your career, or at least by interning in a relevant organization. Remember why you came to enroll at a top BBA College - pen it down, revisit what you did write and make it your mantra. While you may find reasons of getting distracted, all you need to do is to remind yourself daily of the goals that you had jotted down for yourself, and doing so would certainly pay off.

2. Learn to Take Risks
Start attending anything that is outside your comfort zone, attend meetings for clubs you never considered joining and introduce yourself to students who may be diametrically opposite to you. Pushing your boundaries can serve several purposes, academically or otherwise. It will expose you to new ideas and ways of thinking that you might not have the opportunity otherwise. Also that since top BBA Colleges have rigorous academic curriculum, the regular influx of new ideas will keep you going all through.

3. Develop Personality
Merely a good CV may not help you to get a decent job like a good personality can. Generally, management jobs require one to be presentable and that is what you need to aim for as well. Tackling situations can be exhausting and if you don’t have the right attitude to deal with such scenarios, your career may not kick start the way you may have imagined. So start improving your personality, sooner the better.

4. Organize and be a Part of Events
Events shall certainly provide you an opportunity to communicate with people that in turn will boost your confidence. Organizing an event will invoke a sense of leadership within you and your management skills are expected to improve as well. At the same time, doing so shall improve your group dynamics, and that is what forms the basis of working in a corporate.

5. Take part in Literary Activities
Speaking confidently is probably the most important skill for a management graduate. Your thoughts are of no use if you cannot put them across with confidence. Taking part in literary events enables you to think diligently and also boosts your confidence.

6. Take a Holistic Approach to Academics
Most of the brighter students may get cocooned themselves in understanding each and every component of all concepts taught in your business school. However, you need to understand that as a thumb rule, it's not all about becoming an expert. What you need to do is to acquire the requisite skills so that you may be able to use them in future.

7. Start Questioning - Speak up your queries
You need to make an effort and show your professors that you do possess an inquisitive mind and they shall certainly reciprocate. Your fundamentals become clear once you start questioning what you are being taught and start looking for logic for everything. This shall help you in improving your critical and analytical skills.

8. Start Networking
Having strong contacts definitely has a lot of advantages as Networking is going to be an important aspect of your management career. Typically, any top BBA College shall put a lot of emphasis on this aspect. In due course of time, they shall arrange for seminars, guest lectures, industrial visits, corporate mentorship where you may have a chance to connect with the people who may matter to you in future. Having access to a good network generally opens up new paths for you.

9. Be Yourself
The best advice a student may receive before starting the BBA program would be that “sooner you are yourself, the better your experience shall be”. During the program, you will be exposed to a totally new environment with all new people and some exciting opportunities in between. However, comparing yourselves too much with others and doing things that may not actually interest you or support your goals may land you in trouble (Just recollect about how many of your friends did choose a particular stream after Grade X only because their best friends did choose so just to realize after 3 months that they committed a costly mistake). It is important to try some new things while in business school, but always make sure you are still being authentic to yourself.

10. Don’t Be Complacent
All said and done, one should not become complacent after gaining admission to a top BBA college. With your school structuring initial curriculum and bringing great employment opportunities directly to you, it becomes easy to fall prey to complacency that you need to guard against.
